The effort to transform central Iowa’s waterways into a recreational amenity for kayaking, fishing and surfing has a new name — Iowa Confluence Water Trails, or ICON for short.
The Tuesday brand announcement for what was previously known as Central Iowa Water Trails coincides with the launch of a fundraising campaign to meet the group’s goal of securing about a third of the project’s $125 million cost from private donors.
The project would create a 150-mile network of water trails, with boat launches and other recreational amenities like fishing passages and whitewater runs for paddlers, in rivers across central Iowa. The centerpiece would be a series of five projects in downtown Des Moines, which sits at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, the region’s largest waterways.
