DES MOINES, IA (Oct. 2, 2024) – ICON Water Trails is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $250,000 Prairie Meadows Legacy Grant. The funding will support ICON’s Prospect Park access point, which aims to revitalize the existing recreational area and expand opportunities for local families. The site will feature a new dock to be named for Prairie Meadows, among other amenities improved at the site.
Prospect Park is a part of ICON’s broader effort to activate 150 miles of water trails across central Iowa, with more than $99 million in funding secured so far. ICON’s strategy drives economic growth, attracts workforce and tourism, and provides access to recreation, all while bolstering on-water safety and environmental conservation. The efficacy of the initiative is evidenced in a recent economic impact report which found that ICON’s fifteen existing sites hosted more than 250,000 visitors and contributed to $11 million in spending — during one recreation season alone.
“Partners like Prairie Meadows empower ICON to accomplish its mission of connecting water, communities, and people.” Stephanie Oppel, Executive Director of ICON Water Trails, said. “This investment in our future Prospect Park site will enhance critical access to green spaces for the surrounding neighborhood, creating low or no cost touch points for recreation, supporting mental and physical health, and contributing to a thriving community.”
“Projects like the Prospect Park capital improvements greatly enhance the quality of life for Iowans,” Julie Stewart, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Prairie Meadows, said. “We are committed to investing in our community and are proud to help advance initiatives that positively impact central Iowa.”
Construction at ICON’s Harriet Street site and Principal Point at the Scott Avenue Dam continue on schedule. ICON’s second whitewater access point at the Fleur Dam is set to go to bid in summer 2025. For regular construction updates, click here.
