Explore Our Water Trails
At ICON, we have a variety of water trails that cater to all levels of experience. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or just starting out, there’s an adventure waiting for you. Beaver Creek is a great place to start if you are new to paddling, with a beginner-friendly access point for canoes and kayaks at 86th Street and 70th Avenue in Johnston. Mally’s Weh-Weh-Neh-Kee Park is another great stop for some family – friendly fun. Home to Fourmile Creek, this park is one of Central Iowa’s most loved wading spots. Check out our Water Trails page to plan a trip down our waterways.
Getting in the Water Not Your Thing? No Worries!
Not everyone is into water sports, and that’s okay — ICON still has something for everyone! Many of our access points are perfect for other outdoor activities that don’t require getting wet.
- Hiking & Biking: For those who prefer to stay dry while soaking in the natural beauty around you, hiking and biking are fantastic ways to explore. With miles of trails along our rivers, you’re sure to find the perfect path for an afternoon hike or bike ride. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely stroll or a more vigorous workout, ICON has trails that will fit your mood.
- Fishing: If casting a line is more your style, you’ll find plenty of peaceful spots along our water trails. You can enjoy the serenity of the riverbank while trying your hand at fishing. To help you make the most of your time on the water, we recommend checking out the Iowa DNR’s fishing tips, which will give you insights into the best practices and local hotspots.
Refuel by the River
After a day of adventure, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Thankfully, ICON is surrounded by some fantastic dining options, right by along our water trails. Grab a bite at Captain Roy’s, a bar and grill situated right along the Des Moines River at Birdland Marina. Single Speed Brewing and Mullets are two other great options for a meal located by our trails. For a more relaxed vibe, pack a picnic and enjoy lunch at one of our scenic river access points!
Extend the Fun: Stay the Night
Why let the fun end when the sun sets? ICON offers plenty of opportunities to camp out and enjoy a night under the stars. If you’re looking for a truly unique camping experience, head to the Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt, where you’ll find primitive campsites that are only accessible by paddlers.
From a quick day trip to a week-long camping expedition, the possibilities for adventure are endless at ICON. Visit our Explore Activities, Safety Tips, and FAQs pages for help planning your trip. Whether you’re kayaking along the river, fishing from the shore, or hiking the trails, every moment offers something memorable.
